Nogales, Ariz. residents who sort their waste into trash and recycling are not having the environmental impact they might hope for – the city’s long-troubled recycling program is now sending nearly all recyclable materials to the landfill.
Kurt Wahl, general manager of Tucson Recycling and Waste, which has a contract to process and transport the city’s recycling, told Nogales councilmembers at a study session last Wednesday that the company has been sending recyclables collected in the city to a landfill because it is cheaper than paying another company to process the materials.
